Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA)

Learn to teach English as a second language to adults.

The Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (CELTA) prepares you to become a teacher of English to speakers of other languages. This intensive, practical course is designed for candidates with little or no previous English language teaching experience.

Why you should study CELTA:

  • CELTA courses are designed by individual centres, based on specifications produced by Cambridge English Teaching Qualifications. As such, CELTA will provide you with knowledge and skills based on international best practice
  • CELTA satisfies the minimum teaching qualification requirements for employment in accredited English language teaching (ELICOS) centres in Australia and most centres worldwide
  • At Curtin English we make sure you’re aware of employment opportunities both in Australia and internationally.

What the course involves

CELTA provides you with hands-on experience in teaching English to adults.

The course is designed to help you develop effective and principled teaching practice. As well as receiving input from your tutors about key topic areas related to teaching English, and observing experienced teachers at Curtin English, you will also complete six hours of hands-on teaching practice.

Throughout the course you’ll maintain a portfolio of all course work, including written assignments, lesson plans and materials related to teaching practice.

On your successful completion of the CELTA, you’ll receive a certificate from Cambridge English and a report from Curtin English.

For additional information please view our CELTA Information Pack.

Please note: At the Coordinator Teacher Training’s discretion, arrangements may be made to reschedule teaching practice or observations if you are absent through illness or unexpected family commitments. However, if you miss more than 20 per cent of the course you will not be eligible to graduate CELTA.

Assessments take place throughout the course and each assessed component contributes to your overall grade. You’ll be informed of your progress through oral and written feedback throughout the course.

CELTA is internally assessed by Curtin English and externally moderated by Cambridge English.

Frequently asked questions

We are not offering a part-time course in 2018.

4 weeks: Monday to Friday from 9 am – 5:15 pm

2017 Full fee = AU$3,350. Early bird discount = AU$3,100. Early bird means that you have been through the application process, been accepted onto the course and paid fees by the early bird date.

CELTA is a non-award course so it does NOT attract fee help.

Fees are payable in full, and in advance of the start of the course.

The course material is given to you. However, you will be required to buy two reference books: one on teaching methodology the other a grammar reference text.

CELTA (+ a degree) qualifies you to work in in accredited ELICOS centres in Australia and in language centres overseas. You will need a different qualification to work in the Australian public education system.

Yes, if you meet the entry criteria. However, you need a degree in order to work in accredited schools in Australia.

Yes. The purpose of the task is to give you an idea about the content of the course and for you to demonstrate that you can research language appropriately.

The purpose of the interview is twofold: to answer all the questions you may have about the CELTA and to gauge whether you have the potential to be successful. It’s a very informal process.

There is no cost to submit an application and attend an interview. Once an applicant is accepted onto the course, they are required to pay a deposit (non-refundable) of $300 to secure their place on the course.

Applications will be accepted up to the Monday of the week before the start date of  a course. However, numbers are usually capped at 12, so applications should be received as early as possible to ensure getting a place. Also the course is challenging, and allowing time for  pre-course study post interview, is strongly recommended.
